Study on pleural effusions due to Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection

چکیده
Objectives To find the incidence of pleural effusions among patients with Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia. Design Prospective study Setting University paediatric unit, Karapitiya, Galle. Method Patients with pneumonia admitted to university paediatric unit from November 1998 to October 1999 were included. Pleural effusions were confirmed either radiologically or by ultrasound examination. Large pleural effusions causing respiratory distress or persistent effusions were aspirated. Results There were 133 patients with pneumonia. 24 children (14 boys, 10 girls) had Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia. All but one were above 4 years of age. Four of the 24 children had pleural effusions. Two effusions were aspirated and were found to be exudates. Conclusions Mycoplasma pneumoniae should be considered an aetological agent in pleural effusions especially when associated with lobar pneumonia

Bacterial Infection Elicits Heat Shock Protein 72 Release from Pleural Mesothelial Cells
Heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) has been implicated in infection-related processes and has been found in body fluids during infection. This study aimed to determine whether pleural mesothelial cells release HSP70 in response to bacterial infection in vitro and in mouse models of serosal infection. In addition, the in vitro cytokine effects of the HSP70 isoform, Hsp72, on mesothelial cells were ex...
متن کاملLesson of the month 1: Pericardial mass and cardiac tamponade associated with Mycoplasma pneumoniae.
Mycoplasma pneumoniae primarily causes respiratory tract infections. Extrapulmonary manifestations are seen in 20-25% of cases. Cardiac involvement is rarely reported. We present a unique case of a pericardial mass and cardiac tamponade associated with a Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia. This required emergency pericardial fenestration. The patient improved dramatically postoperatively on antibi...

Background & Aim: Adenosine deminase(ADA) can be used in the diagnosis of tuberculous pleural effusions. In countries with high prevalence of tuberculous pleural effusions, specificity and sensitivity for ADA test is high, therefore it is an integral part of a diagnostic workup of lymphocyte-rich exudative body fluids, and it is a cheap and economically cost-effective test. No study has bee...
متن کاملThe prevalence of Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection in patients with ventilator-associated pneumonia hospitalized in intensive care unit
Background: Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a type of hospital acquired pneumonia with the mortality rate between 27% and 76% that develops more than 48–72 h after endotracheal intubation. Possible causes leading to this infection can be Mycoplasma pneumoniae. The objective of this study was to determine the presence of Mycoplasma pneumoniae in bronchoalveolar samples of patients with ...
